Remove Color Casts in Lightroom With the White Balance Selector
A colour cast can make an otherwise well-exposed photograph look unmistakably wrong. Skin may turn orange, snow can look blue, and a neutral wall may appear green or magenta. These shifts usually come from the light source rather than a fault in your camera, and Lightroom gives you a fast way to correct them with the White Balance Selector.
The tool is especially useful when a photograph contains something that should be neutral: a white shirt, grey pavement, a sheet of paper, or a properly balanced studio backdrop. Instead of guessing a temperature value, you can sample that neutral area and let Lightroom calculate a more suitable balance between warm and cool tones, as well as between green and magenta.

Your camera’s automatic white balance attempts to compensate, but it can misread a scene when one colour dominates the frame.
A sunset portrait is a good example. The warm light is part of the atmosphere, so removing all of the orange would make the image dull. However, if the person’s face has become strongly red or yellow, a moderate correction may restore believable skin while retaining the evening mood. White balance correction is therefore about judging intent, not forcing every image to look clinically neutral.
Colour casts also appear when a scene contains mixed light sources. A subject standing beside a window may receive blue daylight on one side and warm interior light on the other. In an Australian coastal landscape, reflected light from pale sand can warm shadows, while open shade under a tree may add a cooler or greener influence. Prepare the image before sampling
Open the photograph in Lightroom Classic or Lightroom and move to the Develop or Edit workspace. In the Basic panel, locate White Balance and choose the eyedropper icon, commonly called the White Balance Selector. In Lightroom, the same principle applies whether you are working with a raw file, JPEG or TIFF, although raw files provide substantially more flexibility.
Before clicking, inspect the image at a useful zoom level. A tiny highlight, a bright reflection or a coloured object may produce an extreme result if sampled accidentally. Look for an area that should be neutral in real life and that is large enough for Lightroom to evaluate accurately. A grey card is ideal, but neutral fabric, concrete or white paper can also work when it is evenly lit.
Raw files retain the broadest adjustment range because white balance is interpreted during processing rather than permanently embedded in the pixels. JPEG files can still be corrected, but strong changes may reveal noise, clipping or unnatural colour transitions. Use the White Balance Selector accurately
Activate the selector and move it over a candidate neutral area. Lightroom displays a preview as you hover, allowing you to see how the photograph would change before applying the adjustment. Click once when the preview looks plausible. The Temperature and Tint sliders will move automatically, creating a new white balance setting.
Do not expect the first click to be perfect. A supposedly white surface may be reflecting nearby grass, painted walls or coloured clothing. Click several suitable areas and compare the previews. Choose the sample that gives skin, whites and familiar objects the most believable appearance rather than simply selecting the brightest spot.
A useful technique is to inspect the selector’s magnified preview, which makes it easier to avoid edges and textured details. Sampling near a boundary between a white shirt and a dark jacket can blend both colours and create an unreliable reading. Aim for the middle of a broad, evenly lit patch.
After applying the correction, temporarily move the Temperature slider warmer and cooler to understand what Lightroom has changed. Then return to the sampled setting and make a small manual adjustment. The selector establishes a strong starting point, while your visual judgement determines whether the final image suits the scene.
Fine-tune temperature and tint
Temperature controls the blue-to-yellow relationship. If the corrected image still looks too blue, move the slider towards warmer values; if it looks too yellow or orange, move it towards cooler values. Tint controls the green-to-magenta relationship and is particularly important under fluorescent lighting, in deep foliage or with some LED fixtures.
Make changes gradually. A small tint adjustment can transform skin tones, especially in portraits. If a person’s face looks slightly green after a neutral sample, move Tint towards magenta by a modest amount. If the image looks pink or purple, move it back towards green. The goal is usually a natural result rather than a perfectly neutral grey.

A neutral sample is a technical reference, not a command to erase the character of the light. Photographs made at Uluru during golden hour should retain some warmth, just as a moody image made on a rainy Sydney afternoon may benefit from a cooler finish. Correct the unwanted cast while preserving the colour story that attracted you to the scene.
Correct difficult scenes with local adjustments
The White Balance Selector changes the global white balance, so it works best when one dominant light source covers the image. Mixed lighting needs a more selective approach. After setting the overall balance, use a Mask, Brush, Linear Gradient or Radial Gradient to target the area that remains visibly incorrect.
For example, a wedding reception may have daylight entering through windows while ceiling lights create warm pools indoors. Balance the main subject first, then mask the background or the side of the face affected by the other source. Lightroom’s local Temperature and Tint controls can shift that area independently without disturbing the rest of the photograph.
Portraits deserve careful inspection at 100 per cent magnification. A global correction may make the background neutral while pushing skin towards pink, or it may produce attractive skin while leaving a white shirt slightly green. Check the face, eyes, teeth and clothing separately, then reduce the strength of any local correction that starts to look obvious.
The same process works for landscapes. Green reflections in a creek, coloured sand, autumn leaves or red rock can fool the selector because they occupy much of the frame. If the sky and clouds look believable but the foreground is still tinted, a local mask can make a restrained correction without removing the natural colours of the land.
Build a dependable editing routine
Consistency matters when processing a group of photographs from the same location or event. Once you have found a trustworthy white balance for a scene, synchronise it across images made under the same lighting, then review each frame individually. Exposure, subject position and reflected colours can still require separate adjustments.
When shooting in changing conditions, divide images into practical groups: open shade, direct sunlight, indoor artificial light and mixed light. Applying one balance to an entire day’s work can create obvious problems, especially during an Australian summer when the light may move from bright beach sun to cool shade within minutes.
A few habits make the selector more reliable:
- Include a grey card or neutral reference in the first frame when colour accuracy matters.

The same café may have different bulbs, window light or wall reflections on another day. Judge colour in a controlled finish
Colour correction is easier when your editing environment is reasonably consistent. Avoid judging subtle tint changes under a strongly coloured room light, and allow your eyes a short break after working on a large batch. Visual adaptation can make a neutral image appear too warm or too cool after prolonged editing.
Use Lightroom’s Before and After view to check whether the correction improves the photograph rather than merely making it different. Look at neutral objects, skin and the overall mood. If a correction makes the image technically neutral but removes the atmosphere of a red outback sunset or a warm evening market, reduce it until the scene feels credible.
Export a test image when colour accuracy is important, particularly for client work or print. Screens, phones and printers interpret colour differently, so an adjustment that looks subtle in Lightroom may appear stronger elsewhere. Keeping a calibrated or sensibly profiled display is valuable, but careful sampling and restrained judgement remain essential.
