How to Use Gradient Filters in Lightroom for Dramatic Skies
A bright sky can make an otherwise well-exposed landscape look flat, pale or distracting. Lightroom’s gradient filters provide a controlled way to darken clouds, recover highlight detail and add colour without affecting every part of the frame. Whites can help establish a deeper tonal ceiling, but excessive reduction may make clouds grey and lifeless. Shape Colour With Subtlety
A gradient mask can adjust colour temperature independently from the land. For trees or uneven ridgelines, work slowly and accept that a small amount of sky adjustment may remain between branches. Trying to cut around every twig can create a less natural result than a gentle overlap.
The foreground should retain enough brightness to establish depth.
