It doesn’t have to be caviar

Canikon

Sometimes I get asked which camera should I buy? Is there something you would recommend? A DSLR or a Point ‘n Shoot, Canon or Nikon? Which model? Which lens? Which accessories?

Before you start your journey into the world of photography ask your self some questions! Exemplarily here are some:

  • Do I wish to take photos in the nature?
  • Will I take photos commonly inside?
  • Will I shoot portraiture?
  • Am I interested in architecture photography?
  • What are my goals?
  • What will I do with my photos after shooting?
  • At which time of the day will I take most of my photos?
  • Will I manipulate and adjust my photos?
  • Where will I store and archive my photos?
  • How will I transport my gear?

Depending on where you are on your deep way into the photographic world those questions will there forever and never stop but they might change!

Canikon So which camera is the best?

DSLR or Point ‘n Shoot? As far as I know serious photographer do have both. The point ‘n shoot is the one to be prepared to shoot a photo anywhere and anytime, the camera when you won’t like to carry all your equipment with you. So in other words it doesn’t have to be caviar anytime!

When you start off, you don’t need to have the best of the best as long as you know what kind of photos you commonly will take. If you will take your pictures usually outside and on day time you are good to buy any entry level DSLR or nearly any nice point ‘n shoot camera out in the world. If you are going to take your photos in the early morning hours or in late afternoon, at night or indoors then you might get in trouble with such cameras and need to spent a bit more money.

The purpose of taking pictures has to be considered as well. If you will commonly take photos on parties to take snapshots a DSLR will not be your favourite! If you are into sports photography you will need a more speedy camera so you won’t miss the right action. Do you need to be creative you might need manual settings with your camera? Do you like to get close to your objects or even would like to take macro photos? Or will you observe wildlife and get birds for example closer? If you start your hobby be sure that you will start a ‘journey of desire’ and will never end until you quit or die.

And then the religious question: Canon or Nikon or …

When I look around and see pros there only seems to be Canon or Nikon as manufacturer – all others seem to be exotics. But there are more manufacturer and when I start to think about these names like Olympus, Pentax, Panasonic, Sigma and many more coming up into my mind. Each brand has it’s own devotees and in their opinion they have the holy grail in equipment. But best of the best seem to be only Canon and Nikon in the end.

Put your hand on your heart and be honest! Is there really nothing that you miss or would like to see on your camera if you own already one? Gotcha! The perfect camera is not there and if – the photo industry would not boom. There were no more brand new model coming to the market every day and most manufacturer would tear down their business.

So if you would ask me what brand would you recommend, I would tell you – get the brand that your friends own, you will participate on their experience and you can exchange equipment, tips and tricks.
