Already at the beginning of this year rumors about Sony working on a new super slow-motion cinema camera buzzed around the web. Even then, the news received a huge media response and the film industry was waiting for the anticipated camera. As of beginning of June the camera awaits its market launch. One more reason for us to introduce the Sony NEX FS700.
Using a firmware upgrade, it will be possible to shoot incredible 4K-size images.
Furthermore, the NEX FS700 features a super slow motion function. Hence it’s possible to record images 120fpm in 16-seconds-burst, 240fpm in 8-seconds-burst and even up to 960fpm are not a problem for the new Sony cinema camera. Alas, without the soon to be released firmware upgrade it will not yet be possible to use the 1080p video mode. However this will be settled with the 4K update, which will enable shots with 10x super slow motion in full-HD quality. Switching to lower resolutions, you can even record in up to 40x super slow motion mode.
This will be good news especially for amateur filmmakers, since such functions have long been desired. Due to the super slow motion recording mode, filmmakers will be able discover new and countless creative ways that were previously only available with special equipment.
The simplified handling of the focus and adjustable size further enhance the ease of use of this professional camera. The auto focus function helps to create images with shallow depth of field during the still picture recording.
With the slow-motion function, Sony aims especially at documentary filmmakers, non-professional directors, and producers of music videos. For hobby filmmakers, who want to use this camera mainly for vacation shots, or family gathering occasions, it will prove not really suitable due to the focus on slow motion recording.
The camcorder is able to record still pictures with a resolution of 8 megapixels. During video recording mode, still picture recording mode is not available.
The NEX FS700 is the first super-35-mm-Camcorder of his class, who is able to produce 4K images, and comes with a 3G HD-SDI output. The term 4K stems from the movie industry. 4K stands for the maximum width of the utilized resolution during the exposure of the images. The predecessor 2K managed up to 2048 pixels. The 4K technique manages accordingly double: 4096 pixels.
In comparison with the previous model Sony NEX FS100, the NEX FS700 comes with build-in ND filters, which allow more shallow depth of field images. Additionally, using the NEX FS700 allows switching between 50 Hz and 60 Hz. This feature is needed to use the 24p recording in the PAL areas, as well as PAL/NTSC without limitations.
Furthermore it is possible to save up to 99 camera profile settings. This provides the users of the Sony NEX FS700 with an easier handling of the camera, since scenes do not have to be readjusted nor calibrated. The import and export of the settings to other camcorders is easily manageable as well.
Conclusion:
The Sony NEX FS700 is a professional camera, which is suitable in particular for documentary filmmakers, non-professional film directors and music video producers. With the upcoming 4K firmware update this camera will be at the top of its segment sooner or later. Sony has developed a completely new and innovative camera series, which stated with the NEX FS 100 .
