For a lot of photographers the iPad is a handy tool to show, upload, edit and organize their photos. The standard “Photos” app is rather basic and has no support for displaying photo metadata like shutter speed, focal length, ISO and much more …
The PhotoMeta app fills this gap. It extracts a huge amount of metadata and supports both JPEG and RAW photo formats. The app even extracts non-standardized metadata – also known as makernotes – from Canon, Nikon, Olympus, Panasonic, Pentax and Sony photos.
When possible, the extracted metadata is displayed in an intuitive, graphical manner: luminance & RGB histograms, focus points and geotag location. When a geotagged photo contains direction info, PhotoMeta even shows the field of view sector on a map. These are typically photos taken with an external GPS module from e.g. Solmeta. Another unique feature is the calculation of additional values like depth of field, hyperfocal distance, field of view, … if the photo metadata contains the required info to do the calculation.
Besides the obvious support for photos imported with the iPad Camera Connection Kit, PhotoMeta also accesses Dropbox photos or internet photos. A very handy feature is the option to save a Dropbox JPEG photo in full resolution to the iPad. The standard Dropbox app doesn’t offer that possibility. Photos available in other apps can be imported in PhotoMeta as long as they are in JPEG format.
PhotoMeta is also a great help for blind and visually impaired photographers by using VoiceOver technology.
. PhotoMeta is available in the App Store (€ 2,39) in the category “Photo & Video”.
