The ones naming geocaching as their hobby and those of these who make use of a Mac will love iCaching .
On our last trip to Belgium we had the problem not to have a continuous internet connection. Due to this circumstance we had to load all those geocaches to our GPS that might be the ones we would like to find even before starting the journey. Although the Garmin Oregon is a nice device it is sometimes very toilsomely to view and read the geocache information on the tiny display, in particular when the geocache description is an HTML one.
Back from the vacation I did a research on geocaching apps on the internet and I found two programs promising that what I searched for. One of the both already dropped from the list as I read the testimonials, so iCaching was the only one that left and it looked like that I found something useful. iCaching recently was published in version 3 with many new features and next to an English interface it now supports German and Dutch.
I’m very impressed by the new features. With iCaching you can easily load pocket queries from geocaching.com into your database, filter, sort, vote and make notes to your caches. Once in your database you can view all details like description, meta data, additional waypoints, logs etc. without an internet connection and transfer data to your GPS device.
You can view geocaches on a map to see where your geocaches are located.
and this is what is written there:
iCaching is an indispensable tool for geocachers with a Mac. Import, organize, manage, explore and export your geocaches with iCaching! A native, fast Mac App. Tested both on Snow-Leopard and Lion.
====== Import ======
Import multiple GPX-files with geocache data (pocketqueries) at the same time, by the import button, or drag and drop them into iCaching. From version 2.7, you’ll even be able to download and import the queries directly from Geocaching.com.
Each GPX-file will be imported into it’s own folder.
====== Organize, manage and explore ======
Explore your whole cache-library with the special ‘Library’-folders. View your founds, first founds and sort by found-date
You can easily add folders and organize your geocaches with drag and drop. Each cache has only one instance in the database.
Extra waypoints (for multi’s) are added to the cache and visible on the waypoints-tab.
Logs are added and sorted on the logs-tab. Every time you import a new version of the geocache, new logs are added to the loglist.
Other tabs display the cache metadata, offline descriptions and the cache-webpage.
View the cache(s) on a map with or without additional waypoints and/or your home-location. This map is interactive; select caches or waypoints on the map to view their properties in iCaching and vice-versa.
An extended search-pane helps you to sort out your caches by all properties of the cache. Save your search-filter as a Smart Folder, for later use of the same filter.
iCaching can contain multiple home- or centerlocations and calculates distance and bearing on the fly.
Add your own notes and make a cache favorite or deprecated.
====== Export ======
iCaching can export to GPX (for many paperless GPS-devices like Garmin Oregon) and to a lot of other file-formats. Direct support for a lot of other GPS-devices is also added.
If you have feature-wishes or discovered something that doesn’t work as expected, please email us because we can’t see reviews in App Stores of all countries. You’ll always get a response.
And of course: if you like iCaching, recommend it with a review!
In short, happy caching with iCaching!
And the changelog:
New features:
- A redesigned Folder-pane, with folders to search the full Cache Library
- The addition of Smart folders: create a filter and save it as a Smart Folder so you can re-use that filter later.
- The log-pane (bottom left) now scrolls, so your previous im- and exportoperations stay visible. Particular handy when importing Pocketqueries with two files.
- Rightclick on columnheaders in the cache-table to select the visible columns. Settings of visible columns and columnorder are saved in the users preferences.
- Scale-indicator added to the Map
- Zoom to all caches in Map
- Your Founds can be refined by Not Found logged, Not Found, Found, 1st, 2nd and 3th Found
- Founddate is extracted from log-entries with your username. Import the ‘Your Founds’ pocketquery from Groundspeak to set your whole found-history
- Import and exportroutines are further optimized.
- Removed the dialog on import that asked for deletion of caches that were not included in the pocketquery. This was to prevent orphaned caches, with the Library-Folders this is no longer an issue.
- The Unavailable stamp, has a brother called ‘Archived’ now. You can see at a glance now wether a cache is temporary or permanent unavailable. When sorting on the ‘Available’ column, the order will be available, unavailable, archived (or verse visa).
- Localisations for German and Dutch
Bug fixes from 2.8
- Crash on import solved
- W/E indicator near 0 degrees had faulty behavior
By the way the German translation is mine. Happy caching!
