From A Distance
We are nearly four weeks back in Germany and still looking back to all the things that happened to us and we are missing all the friendly and nice people, friends – old and new, we have to leave in Nova Scotia. Sadly we could not take them with us…. but Nova Scotia starts with the people. This is one sentence out of my winning video and one that I used during many interviews while in Nova Scotia.
German couple tours Nova Scotia in trip of a lifetime
Joerg and Nicole Knoerchen walk the beach in Ingonish last week. The German couple has been travelling across the province for the last month after winning the trip through the Tourism Department’s ‘iLove Nova Scotia’ contest.

SYDNEY — It’s been a trip of a lifetime for a German couple thanks to a Nova Scotia government-run contest.
Joerg and Nicole Knoerchen have travelled from one corner of the province to the other.
From Tiverton, Digby County, where they saw the Balancing Rock, a large basalt column that appears to balance on its end on the southwestern tip of Nova Scotia, to a chartered flight over the western side of the Cape Breton highlands, they fell in love with the province all over again.
Hikes around the Cabot Trail
Here is our last blog while we are still in Nova Scotia. Four weeks, we thought, would have given us the chance to see all the things that Nova Scotia has to offer. Right now it feels like we arrived yesterday although we are already nearly four weeks here and only the two days that we have planned for travelling back from Cape Breton to Halifax are left.

Halfway through a tour of Nova Scotia, Joerg and Nicole Knoerchen stopped to experience Bear River and Balancing Rock.
The Knoerchens are from Aachen, Germany, and entered the ‘I Love Nova Scotia’ contest through Nova Scotia Tourism, which required them to make a video explaining why they love Nova Scotia. They won with the most votes and worked with department staff to create a vacation customized to their likes and interests. The trip is valued at $15,000.

after some more hikes and landed up at Cape Split where we met some ‘old’ hiking friends to hike to the tip of the cape. Unfortunately I lost my “be prepared” camera at this trail a Canon IXSUS 70, so go for a hike and if you find my camera feel free to send it back to me…
Barrington Woolen Mill – Cape Sable Island – Cape Forchu – Gilbert’s Cove – Digby – Brier Island – Balancing Rock – Bear River – Kejimkujik National Park
The bad weather confined us within the next few days, while we passed the old Woolen Mill in Barrington, it was still dry but suddenly heavy rain poured down and made our bird watching tour at Cape Sable Island impossible, heavy fog covered the lighthouse at Cape Forchu but just a few hours later Gilbert’s Cove Lighthouse showed up in a few shafts of sunlight and the evening at Digby promised nicer weather for the next day. Along with sun we drove to Westport at Brier Island, but arrived there – again fog was against us and took away all chances to see any whales here as our tour was cancelled.

Halifax Beer
While thinking over what another nice story would be to write about, and while I was listening to Celtic music, suddenly – I heard that Stan Rogers song “Barrett’s Privateers”.
Halifax Beer
Oh, the year was 1778, how I wish I was in Sherbrooke now!
A letter of marque came from the king,
To the scummiest vessel I’d ever seen,
God damn them all!
I was told we’d cruise the seas for American gold
We’d fire no guns-shed no tears
Now I’m a broken man on a Halifax pier
